Student Discipline Philosophy Discipline is defined as training that develops self-control, character, or orderliness and efficiency (Webster's Dictionary). In Chinese, the verb for discipline is "jiao yu" means self-control and the noun is "xun lian" which means instruct and counsel. At Yinghua Academy the teachers and staff view it as our responsibility to be models and teachers to help students build both self-control and character based on our four guiding principles: Safety (Physical and Emotional), Chinese Language Learning, Rigorous Academics, and Happiness. We believe that it is the right and the responsibility of all children to benefit from and abide by these four principles, so that we may all feel successful in our learning at Yinghua. We discuss these four principles regularly at Yinghua in both English and Chinese. In addition to discussing these principles, we will also teach them through modeling and direct instruction using a character education plan which includes such skills as problem-solving, empathy, respect, and responsibility.
