Student Discipline Policy

Yinghua Academy works to implement a respectful learning environment. We will be systematically teaching the children social skills. We will not just impose expectations of behavior on the children, but will model the behavior and overtly teach the behavior. Staff, students, and volunteers will be instructed in a conflict resolution process and will use common language with students to help them control impulses and make constructive choices. We will have a consistent process to be used by the entire school community.

When students have disagreements with other students, instead of having a “time out,” the students will be sent to Peace Zones, where they will think about why that are having a conflict.  After spending some independent self reflection time, the students will meet on a Peace Rug to talk with each other to try to learn how to resolve their conflicts. After the students have unsuccessfully tried to resolve their conflicts, an adult will help mediate.  Through this practice, the students will learn the importance of taking ownership and responsibility for their actions.

Teachers will focus on and applaud desired behavior rather than focus on undesired behavior.  Rewards will be given to groups of students when they show teamwork and community.

If a child is misbehaving and is not successful at resolving their problem by going to the peace rug, they will be sent to have a discussion with an administrator.  If your child is sent to the office once, a letter will be sent home to the parents.  If the child is sent multiple times, or if there is a more serious concern, a phone call will be made to the parents.  If the problem persists, a conference may be arranged between the director, teacher and parent.
