Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year Celebration

Lunar New Year, also known in Chinese culture as Spring Festival, is an annual event that celebrates the beginning of a new year based on the lunisolar calendar. Celebrations of Lunar New Year traditionally last 16 days, often occurring at the end of January and into February, and include spending time with family, cleaning and decorating to ward off bad luck, giving 红包 (hóngbāo), and watching performances. These customs reflect profound cultural heritage and expectations for a better life, and it represents new beginnings for celebration, joy and people’s vision for the future.

At Yinghua, we have specifically assigned six weeks of curriculum to focus on practice for our school-wide Lunar New Year performances held at Bethel University’s Benson Great Hall. The performances are a great time for all students to showcase their Mandarin language skills and what they have learned this year through songs, dances, acting, and more as each grade has a different act within the show. Current families can click the button below for specific information and reminders pertaining to the 2025 performances.

During Lunar New Year, the act of giving a red envelope or 红包 (hóngbāo) symbolizes passing on good luck and fortune. As a Chinese immersion school, the celebration of the Lunar New Year is the time to give a red envelope to Yinghua Academy, wishing our community a flourishing year.

Your donation will help close the funding gap that exists for charter schools and support social-emotional learning for our families and staff as well as our teachers’ well-being.
